As reported in the NYT, Steven Soderbergh (?) and Brad Pitt (?!) were all set to film a movie based on the book "Moneyball", which tells the story of how A's GM Billy Beane used innovative statistical analysis to create a team, using a limited payroll, that could lose in the first round of the playoffs every year.
Apparently some executive at Sony actually put down the drugs for a little while and realized this movie makes no sense, and it was shelved after $10M+ of pre-production.
