Consider the Octopus

In 1952 a local fish vendor in Detroit flung an octopus on to the ice, which supposedly represented the eight victories it took to win the cup at the time. That year the Wings went on to win the cup in 8 straight games, and the bizarre tradition was started. Its definitely one of the funniest/weirdest sports traditions...I myself have been stopped when entering an away Red Wings game and asked if I was strapped with cephalopod.

Now there are rules to the octo-toss. You can only throw the octopus on the ice after the national anthem or after a Red Wings goal, and can never throw it at a player (that's just rude). Wings fans tend to stick to the guidelines and even pull off an octopus or two on the road. Last year a badass Wings fans bought two seats near the glass and had a boiled octopus (boiling hides the smell) in a plastic bag under his Wings sweater. He tossed it on the ice and was immediately ejected, the fan went outside, changed into different clothing, and sat down in his second seat...hilaaarious. LETS GO RED WINGS!!!!!

"Both teams played hard...good night and god bless."
