This excuse is funny and exactly the excuse used by several baseball players: they test positive for testosterone and then say they took a supplement which had a component that they didn't know about. the component they are are specifically referring to is DHEA a testosterone precursor. Thing is they didn't test positive for DHEA they tested positive for testosterone...and ingesting DHEA has never been proven to increase testosterone. It is transparent BS, he tested positive for high testosterone. Now there is variation in the ammount of testosterone that one produces...hell he could have 3 ballz. But the test is only positive if the testosterone has an abnormal carbon isotope profile, which can only happen if it's synthetic. So obviously he took PED. Its still weird, I dunno what clear advantage he was getting. I mean certainly a Ben Wallace or Dwight could benefit but not a player in Shard's mold...maybe it was the lifetime of being told that he was too small to play his position.
I mean, I heard you can get crazy abnormal isotope profiles in your testosterone if you eat hella yams, but you can't get crazy amts of testosterone from eatin em. So yeah, total BS, and people probably won't call him on it. Also costly (loses 1.6 million from this), and now his pube chin is "pube-roid" chin, or something like that.
thanks for the info GD, that's pretty enlightening. not really sure why details/explanations like this are never offered and players are allowed to keep up this nonsense
It's a myth that steroids only help people get big, it will give a competitive advantage in any sport. Not all steroids give you bulk, many are designed to give you great strength gains with little weight gain making you more explosive, which would help at any position. They give you more endurance to train and practice and your body will recover quicker, so if you us the right drugs then it will help no matter what sport you are playing.
G is right but some of these tests are probably positive for 19-nor androgens, which are synthetic hormones that are not naturally occuring in the body. But there were supplements available called nor-androstenedione. These were created to potentially mimic/be a precursor for Deca-durabolin one of the most popular anabolic steroids. I believe they are off the market now, but I think they were popular 5 or so years ago. A positive test for a metabolite of any compound like this (a chemically modified androgen or androgen precursor, which are not naturally occuring) would consitute a positive doping test, no matter what the level. I beleve that there have also been reports that some supplements contain these compounds even when they are not on the label. Hence, the defense that it was a tainted supplement.
Maybe I'll write a post on steroid/supplement use/testing to explain this more clearly if I get time one of these days.
