X-Games Recap
Some people have a hard time categorizing the "extreme" sports genre as actual sports, but from the spills and pure insanity these guys take - I think it's quite justified. This past weekend marked the end of X-Games 15 (15!? I remember the first extreme games and the PS game it spawned, not to mention hours spent trying to build - unsuccessfully - my own street luge). There were plenty of insane tricks pulled and massive crashes, but all in all it was an entertaining few hours on the ESPN/ABC networks. One thing I did notice however was the lack of diversity of event types. Yes there were vert events, freestyle, street, and big air (which is by far one of the most insane things to do besides jumping out of an airplane without a parachute). However there were only MotoX, BMX, Skateboarding and Rally car racing as disciplines. What happened to street luge, inline skating, wakeboarding, speed climbing? I think these died as the trendiness of being "X-treme" died and with a dying trend, goes the finances behind them. It's an unfortunate end that the struggling economy and changing trends did in a lot of x-games events. Overall, this year's x-games were still prety sick, and as long as there are people like Travis Pastrana around, will always be entertaining.
