Redskins: Maybe That Wasn't Cool...?

The supreme court is being asked by a group of native americans to review a lower court ruling that allowed the NFL franchise to keep its name and trademark. The accusing group is of course claiming that the name "Washington Redskins" is offensive and actually won their case before the US patent and trademark office but have since had losses to other Judges. Nevertheless it will be interesting to see if the supreme court takes the case...I mean in general team names like the Seminoles or the Braves are hard to get worked up about. They are simply the name of some goup, whether or not they have offensive symbols/mascots is a completely different issue. The Cleveland Indians are probably more borderline since its not technically correct to call native americans Indians, it would be like naming a team after chinese people and calling them the Baltimore Orientals. You know, kinda messed up but whateva....I do what I want. The Indians logo, however is a ridiculous charicature of a native american and probably crosses the line. But Redskins? I admit that I never really thought about it before but that is kind of wack, I mean the Baltimore Yellowskins or the Clevleand Blackies wouldn't fly so why should this? Its a deliberately pejorative term and you know you wouldn't call a native american a redskin to their face, so how can you use it to name an entire NFL franchise?

"Both teams played hard...goodnight and godbless."

  1. They should say that they are referring to redskin potatoes, and that the picture of the Native American is unrelated.

I'm with you, G. You mention Chief Wahoo, and it was actually this image that made me realize that even though it doesn't offend me (Chief Wahoo has been a big part of my life since birth), that doesn't mean it isn't offensive. So a wag of my finger to skins of the rest of the spectrum if they try to tell Native Americans that any team name/logo is not offensive.

  2. I'd root for the Baltimore Orientals. Maybe they can sellout Camden for once without having the Red Sox or Yankees in town.
